Social sciences就是“社会科学”吗?

　　"Social sciences"就是“社会科学”吗？

　　翻译国外学术文献不免要碰到一个术语问题。这里要谈到的是：英语"the social sciences"与汉语“社会科学”是否对应，或者说是否可以把"（the） social science（s）“译成”社会科学“或把后者译如，《新英汉词典》将"the social sciences"译做”（各门）社会科学“；《汉英词典》则将”社会科学“译做”social sciences".看来，两者同义，该是毋庸置疑的了吧。

　　但是，汉语“社会科学”是指什么；英语“（the）social science（s）”又是指什么，这是需要加以明确的。

　　按《现代汉语词典》，“社会科学”乃是“研究各种社会现象的科学，包括教育学、政治经济学、法律学、历史学、文艺学、美学等。社会科学属于上层建筑范围，有强烈的阶级性。”1979年版《辞海》的释义亦与此大体相同，只是去掉了“美学”，加上了“语言学”、“民族学”、“宗教学”和“社会学”，把“政治经济学”改为“政治学”和“经济学”罢了。 % I6 E, d' K* v! O$ I0 [

　　但按W3即《韦氏国际词典》（三版），则英语"social science"有两个含义： wai_mao_zu.com

　　（1）以人类社会的制度和功能及以社会成员间相互关系为研究对象的科学诸部门（the branches of science that deal with the institutions and functioning of human society and with interpersonalrelations of individuals or members of society）； waimaozu_com

　　（2）以人类社会某一特定方面为其研究对象的科学（如经济学或政治学）（science[as economics or political science）dealing with a particular phase or aspect of human society）。 WAIMAOZU.COM

　　两相比较，汉语“社会科学”的含义显然比英语"social science为广。但两者的区别远不止此：

　　据同上韦氏词典，英语中还有一个区别于"social science"的概念。"behavioral science"，即“行为科学”，并举了“心理学”、“社会学”和“人类学”为例；而如众所周知，这三门学科都是直接包括在汉语的“社会科学”之内的。

　　笔者还曾在美国<时代）周刊上读到过一段记载——哈佛大学的一位已故校长早在1945年的一次讲话中就谈到：一个大学毕业生必须修完三大学科的课程，这三大学科便是“natural sciences"，”socialsciences"和"humanities".请看原文： 外@贸@族

　　在英语中把“humanities"等等同”social sciences"相提并论的情况是比较常见的，足以证实上引哈佛大学某较长的看法有其一般性： 外贸族

　　由此可见，汉语“社会科学”仅仅同“自然科学”相提并论；而英语"the social sciences"，则不但同“自然科学”而且也同“人文科学即”the humanities“等等相提并论的。这也就是说”the social sciences"不仅不包括“自然科学”而且至少也不包括“the humanities"乃至"fine arts"在内。

　　那么"the humanities'，指的究竟是什么呢？据1975年美国兰登出版社<大学词典），此词共有两义： wai_mao_zu.com

　　（1） 古典拉丁与希腊的语言和文学（the study of classical Latinand Greek language and literature）； s; j9

　　（2） 区别于“科学”的“文学”、“哲学”、“艺术”等等（literature，philosophy，art，etc.，as distinguished from the sciences）。

　　可见，按（现代汉语词典）属“社会科学”的“文学”、“艺术”等等都不但不属于"social sciences"，而且根本就不在"sciences"这一范畴之内。 s; j9

　　当然，英美的英语辞书很多，各家所述也未必一致（这里就不多说了），故于译事之余略为之记，提出来供大家讨论，以期引出更多的资料来对此予以肯定、否定或修正，来共同理清这笔糊涂账。 ! P+ N% W7 [!
